As the late-summer heat begins to give way to cooler autumn breezes (I heard you chuckle), September always brings a renewed sense of energy and purpose to the Heights. It is wonderful to see families settling back into school routines, neighbors out on evening walks, and our historic community coming together to plan a vibrant fall season.
Looking back on August, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our Night at the Theatre, as well as those who turned out to donate at
our Fire Station Community Blood Drive. Your continued support and participation are what make our neighborhood so special.
As we turn the page to autumn, we have several major events on the horizon that showcase the spirit, charity, and governance of the Heights:
September General Meeting: Board Nominations & Business Member Showcase Please join us for our monthly General Meeting at the historic Houston Heights Fire Station, 107 W. 12th Street, on Wednesday, September 9 at 6:30pm.
Business Member Showcase: We are excited to highlight our local business community with a special showcase during the meeting! Come early to connect with fantastic neighborhood business owners, learn more about their services, discover how local businesses partner with HHA to support our community, and win door prizes!
Board Nominations & Eligibility: This meeting also serves as our official nomination night for the upcoming HHA Board of Directors election. Nominations will be formally accepted from the floor. To stand for election or cast a ballot, individuals must be current HHA members in good standing.
Voting & Deadlines: Following nominations, official voting details and election timelines will be finalized. If you need to renew your annual membership to ensure your voting eligibility, please make sure your dues are up to date via our website prior to the meeting. Serving on the board is one of the most direct ways to guide our community initiatives and preserve the character of the Heights!
Casino Night Fundraiser - Friday, October 2 Get ready for an elegant, high-stakes evening of fun! On October 2, we are transforming our historic Houston Heights Fire Station into a lively speakeasy. Whether you are a seasoned player or just looking to enjoy a fantastic night out with friends and neighbors, this fundraiser supports vital HHA community programs. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available on our website—be sure to get yours early!
The 41st Annual Houston Heights Fun Run - Saturday, October 10 A beloved neighborhood tradition since 1985, our annual Fun Run returns to Marmion Park, 1800 Heights Boulevard! Featuring USATF-certified 5K and 10K courses down the Boulevard, along with a 5K Walk and a Kids 1K, there is truly something for every age and fitness level. Whether you plan to sprint for a record, stroll with your family, or anything in between, registration is officially open on our website.
Beyond our big events, our committees remain hard at work—from our Urban Forestry team enhancing neighborhood green spaces to our Heights Constable Patrol program keeping our streets safe.

In 2016, volunteers of the Urban Forestry Committee worked to create the first Green Corridor in the City of Houston. Utilizing the City of Houston Ordinance, this Yale Green Corridor protects trees in the right-of-way along Yale Street between 6th Street and 19th Street.
Today our Yale Green Corridor is 10 years old!
To honor this anniversary, the Committee is raising funds to replace and refresh the missing street sign toppers along the Yale Green Corridor. Your tax-deductible donation directly helps keep the Heights looking beautiful and distinct. Any contribution—big or small—makes a meaningful difference for our trees and streetscapes!

Plan to join us at the Firestation to celebrate all things tree in the Heights! The Urban Forestry Committee has planned a fun and informative day for you. Visit with Trees for Houston, Houston Parks Board, Bartlett Trees, Native Plant Society, local nurseries, and other community partners for information on proper tree planting and maintenance.
Learn about the HHA Committees that are involved in maintaining and improving our community -- Boulevard Beautification, Donovan Park, Garden Club, Yale Green Corridor, and more.
Register for a FREE TREE certificate and sign up for the Tree Give-Away during the Gift of Trees Day on October 18.
There will be a Kids Zone filled with crafty things to keep the little ones occupied. At 11:00 am, there will be a brief presentation celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Yale Green Corridor. Hear the history of the Yale Trees and the various efforts to sustain this green canopy.
Shape the Future of Our Neighborhood: Run for the 2026 HHA Board of Directors
The HHA is seeking dedicated community members to run for open seats on our 2026 Board of Directors. Since 1974, the HHA has cherished it's volunteers that help drive the success of our neighborhood. Serving on the board offers a hands-on opportunity to help guide the future of the Heights while protecting the character that makes our area unique. Board members directly oversee:
Historic Parks & Facilities: Stewarding and funding neighborhood treasures including Marmion Park, Donovan Park, the Heights Boulevard esplanade, and the Historic Heights Fire Station.
Neighborhood Advocacy & Safety: Supporting vital initiatives like the Constable Patrol Program, land-use planning, and deed-restriction enforcement.
Community Life: Fostering a connected, small-town atmosphere where local businesses thrive and historic roots are preserved.
The board meets on the third Monday of each month at the Historic Houston Heights Fire Station. If you are ready to lend your perspective, leadership, and time to keeping the Heights vibrant and protected, we encourage you to submit your candidacy.

Celebrate the Groundbreaking at Lawrence Park
Join the Houston Parks Board, the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and Mayor John Whitmire to kick off construction for the Let's Play Houston initiative at Lawrence Park! Planned upgrades include an all-new inclusive playground with shaded areas, expanded fitness zones, paved seating plazas, and improved accessibility connections directly to the MKT Trail.
