🎭 August General Meeting: HHA Night at the Theatre

For this month’s General Meeting, we’re taking a break from our usual routine and enjoying a special community night out!

• Location: Alley Theatre, 615 Texas Avenue, 77002
• Event: A thrilling live performance of The Girl on the Train.

It’s a wonderful chance to beat the summer heat, sip a cold drink, and enjoy fantastic theater together with fellow neighbors. Be sure to grab your tickets early if you haven't already!

🌳 Urban Forestry Committee

Our Urban Forestry Committee works tirelessly to maintain our neighborhood's lush canopy, protect native growth, and preserve the unique historical charm of our streets.

Right now, the committee is raising funds to replace and refresh the faded street sign toppers along the Yale Street Green Corridor. These toppers are a signature piece of our historic identity, and your tax-deductible donation directly helps keep the Heights looking beautiful and distinct. Any contribution—big or small—makes a meaningful difference for our trees and streetscapes!

Did you know our neighborhood safety program is supported directly by residents like you? The Heights Constable Patrol Program provides dedicated Harris County Precinct 1 deputies to patrol our streets, offer vacation watch services, and respond quickly to non-emergencies.

🎒 Back to School

It’s hard to believe, but back-to-school season is officially here! As Houston ISD and our neighborhood schools—including Heights HS, Hogg & Hamilton MS, Harvard, Helms, Field, Love, and Travis Elementary—reopen their doors, please keep an eye out for increased foot, bicycle, and bus traffic.

• Drive safely: Keep your speed down in school zones and stay alert at crosswalks during morning drop-offs and afternoon pickups.
• Support local students: Look out for upcoming supply drives and volunteer opportunities to support our neighborhood teachers and schools.

🏃 Save the Date: Houston Heights Fun Run

Lace up your running shoes (or walking shoes)! Planning is well underway for our upcoming Houston Heights Fun Run on Saturday, October 10. Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a casual walker, or bringing the whole family out for the 10K, 5K, or Kids' 1K, it’s one of our absolute favorite community traditions. Registration is officially open on our website, so sign up early, grab your race shirt, and start training!

Run for the 2026 HHA Board of Directors

The Houston Heights Association is currently seeking dedicated members to run for open seats on the 2026 Board of Directors.

Since 1973, the HHA has been a 100% volunteer-led organization built by neighbors, for neighbors. If you care deeply about preserving our neighborhood’s history, guiding local development, planning events, or giving back to the community, we would love to have your leadership and perspective.

Serving on the board is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of the Heights. Board members play a direct role in funding and maintaining our cherished green spaces like Marmion and Donovan parks, preserving the Historic Houston Heights Fire Station, and supporting the beautification of Heights Boulevard. It is also a chance to get involved with vital community efforts, from the Constable Patrol Program to land use advocacy and deed restriction enforcement.

Our shared vision is for the Houston Heights to be recognized as a diverse, small-town community in the heart of Houston—where neighbors and businesses thrive, children learn and play, and history lives. If you are passionate about that same vision, we encourage you to step up.

The board meets on the third Monday of every month at the historic Houston Heights Fire Station, and we welcome anyone who wants to take an active role in keeping the Heights connected, vibrant, and protected.

Beginning in late July, a section of the White Oak Bayou Greenway west of Studemont Street (behind Olivewood Cemetery) will experience temporary closures for approximately three weeks while the Harris County Flood Control District completes infrastructure repairs. The trail will remain open outside of active construction hours, but during work periods, users should plan ahead and utilize the nearby MKT Trail to safely detour around the affected area. Please refer to the detour map below to navigate between 11th Street/TC Jester and Bayou Greenways Park, and visit hcfcd.org/maintenance for further project details. 

Join us on Tuesday, August 18, from 10:00am to 2:30pm at the historic Houston Heights Fire Station,107 W. 12th Street, for our next community blood drive.  True North 2026 artist Mark Nelson brings his meaningful installation, “MARBLEOUS GfG BUCKET CORRAL,” to the 1200 block of Heights Boulevard. Inspired by a close call his son had with broken park glass in 1994, Nelson launched the GLASSfreeGROUNDS project, where community members painted buckets used to safely clean up hazardous glass—which was later melted down into 180,000 blue marbles. His current sculpture features 80 of these beautifully hand-painted buckets, inviting everyone to enjoy the unique artwork while reflecting on the importance of keeping our public parks safe and glass-free. 

 Heights Garden Club Presents: Angel Wing Arts brings this Bee Watering Station Craft to the Heights Garden Club 

Join the Heights Garden Club on Wednesday, August 26 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm for a special hands-on event featuring Angel Wing Arts. During this gathering, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a unique Bee Watering Station Craft. As the summer heat continues, building these custom hydration stations is a fantastic way to support local pollinators and provide a safe, shallow resting spot for bees in your own backyard. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or just looking for a relaxing craft night, this is a wonderful opportunity to get creative, connect with fellow neighbors, and make a beautiful, environmentally friendly addition to your garden.  

 August Yard of the Month – 619 E. 8th Street 

Congratulations to David Morello, our August Yard of the Month winner! For David, designing, building, and nurturing his garden is a profound source of joy and therapy, serving as a quiet sanctuary where the relentless noise of daily life fades away. He finds that the patience and attention poured into the earth—whether digging in the soil, deadheading flowers, or watching tiny seeds transform—acts as a natural stress reliever and a mirror for self-care that restores the spirit. Neighbors are warmly invited to stop by and admire his stunning front-yard zinnias, which were grown from seed back in March and continue to grow more beautiful with each passing day.
