As the leaves begin to turn and the cooler fall air settles into the Heights, it is always a privilege to reflect on what makes our community so special. Our neighborhood thrives because of the active participation, passion, and warmth of everyone who lives here, and the coming months bring some of our most beloved traditions of the year.
Here are a few key highlights and upcoming events to mark on your calendar:
Heights Art Crawl - Saturday, November 7: We are thrilled to celebrate the rich creative talent in our neighborhood. Be sure to check out the local galleries, open studios, and pop-up exhibits featuring work from our neighborhood’s phenomenal artists. It’s a wonderful opportunity to stroll the Heights, support local art, and connect with fellow neighbors.
General Meeting - Monday, November 9: Please join us for our 9th Annual Greater Heights School Choice Fair at the next HHA General Meeting. This meeting will offer a space to learn more from our local schools and have your questions answered. We will announce the new board members!
Holiday Home Tour - Friday, December 4 & Saturday, December 5: The holiday season in the Heights wouldn't be complete without our flagship Holiday Home Tour. This festive weekend offers a breathtaking look inside some of the historic and uniquely designed homes in our area, beautifully adorned for the season. Keep an eye out for details on tickets, shuttle routes, and volunteer opportunities—we can always use docents and helpers to make the weekend a success!
None of these events would be possible without the dedicated committee chairs, board members, and volunteers who give so generously of their time. Thank you for your continued support in making the Heights such a vibrant place to call home. I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming gatherings!
Warmly,
Katye Tipton
HHA President

In 2016, volunteers of the Urban Forestry Committee worked to create the first Green Corridor in the City of Houston. Utilizing the City of Houston Ordinance, this Yale Green Corridor protects trees in the right-of-way along Yale Street between 6th Street and 19th Street.
Today our Yale Green Corridor is 10 years old!
To honor this anniversary, the committee is raising funds to replace and refresh the missing street sign toppers along the Yale Green Corridor. Your tax-deductible donation directly helps keep the Heights looking beautiful and distinct. Any contribution—big or small—makes a meaningful difference for our trees and streetscapes!
The link below will take you to the donation page on the HHA’s website. Thank you for your support! To learn more about the Urban Forestry Committee, visit our page on the HHA website.

Have a Voice in the Future of the Heights: Join the HHA Land Use Committee!
The Houston Heights is a special place to live, work, and play, and protecting the character of our neighborhood takes an engaged community. The HHA's Land Use Committee helps monitor development, deed restrictions, property use, and other issues that may impact our neighborhood. The committee serves as an advocate for the Heights by staying informed about proposed projects, reviewing land use concerns, and helping ensure that development is thoughtful and consistent with the community's interests.
We are looking for residents who are passionate about our neighborhood and interested in getting involved! Whether you have experience in real estate, planning, architecture, construction, or simply want to make a difference in your community, we welcome your participation.
Interested in joining? Email hhalanduse@gmail.com to learn more and get involved. Together, we can help preserve what makes the Houston Heights so special!
As the holidays approach, Gulf Coast Blood invites Heights neighbors to give a gift that truly matters at our blood drive on Tuesday, November 17. Someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds, and a single donation can help save up to three lives, from accident victims and surgery patients to neighbors going through cancer treatment. Every donor this month takes home a limited-edition Gulf Coast Blood “Donor” crewneck as a thank-you (while supplies last), just in time for sweater weather. Book your appointment ahead of time to keep check-in quick, and bring a friend to double the impact.
“Migrations” pairs Keith Crane’s welded steel tree with Damon Thomas’s handmade clay creatures, which change with the seasons: red birds in spring, owls in summer, bats in fall and squirrels in winter. Crane is a self-taught metal artist who has lived in the Heights since 1988, and Thomas was born in the Heights and returned in 1996. Scan the QR code at the site or use the Otocast app to hear the artists talk about the work.
Congratulations to Jim and Donna, our November Yard of the Month! They planted their garden in 2024 with clean lines and low maintenance in mind. Two older trees keep the property’s historic character: a leaning Live Oak and an aging Sycamore, which they’re working hard to keep healthy. Around them they’ve planted a large number of young trees, including Bald Cypress, Bur Oak, Sycamore, Redbud, Vitex and Chinese Fringe, adding layers of green that will keep maturing over time. Straight rows of Silhouette Sweetgums and Eagleston Hollies are slowly growing into natural privacy walls. The result is a garden that feels modern and thoughtfully designed, yet relaxed and welcoming. Thanks to Joshua’s Native Plants & Garden Antiques at 502 W. 18th Street for the gift card awarded to Donna and Jim.
Join the Heights Garden Club on Saturday, November 14 from 10:00am–11:00am at 2410 Keene Street. Horticulturist Cory Saul has turned a long-neglected lot in Near Northside into a resilient native plant and kitchen garden, with a re-wilded drainage ditch, a live oak canopy and cactus mounds built on concrete rubble.
