August is here—which means backpacks are being dusted off, lunchboxes are reappearing, and parents across the Heights are bracing for the back-to-school shuffle. If you're anything like me, you’re equal parts emotional and ecstatic!
Included with this month’s letter is a sweet photo of me and my youngest, Declan, at last month’s Great American Pie Contest, where he proudly took home 3rd Place Junior Baker! We had such a great time tasting pies from across our neighborhood and cheering on so many incredible bakers. Thank you to everyone who made it such a memorable evening!

This month’s Yard of the Month is a bold and beautiful departure from traditional lawn care—a vibrant, low-maintenance prairie full of native plants, pollinators, and personality. After losing trees to recent storms, the homeowners reimagined their front yard with a focus on sustainability and beauty. Ornamental grasses, thyme, salvia, rosemary, bee balm, and catmint fill the space with movement and color, while a mix of wildflowers and mosquito-repelling plants support both pollinators and porch-sitters alike. Two water features, including a small copper trough turned frog pond, and hand-built bee watering stations make the space feel alive in every sense. An 1,800-lb moss rock known as “Pride Rock” offers the family dog a perch, while a fast-growing retama tree provides dappled shade. Creative lighting, rebuilt entry steps, and thoughtful layout decisions give the yard a cozy glow after dark. As one neighbor said, “It looks like a little prairie”—and it’s clear this yard was designed with care, intention, and love for both nature and the neighborhood.
