Harvest hello, Houston Heights! (Who doesn’t love a seasonal alliteration?!)
With costumes packed away and turkeys on standby, November has officially arrived! Since autumn is my favorite season, I look forward to enjoying this time full of gratitude, special gatherings, and some seriously delightful neighborhood events.
Included in this month’s letter is a photo I’m honored to be in with two of
my favorite community leaders: Emily Guyre, our HHA Executive Director, and Abbie Kamin, one of the hardest-working people in local government who tirelessly serves District C as our City Council Member.
The three of us were so proud to be in the room for our wildly successful Dining for Donovan event. (Thank you to Kyle Buthod from Patton Productions for capturing this and many other special moments from the evening.) Together, as a neighborhood, we raised$100,000to jump-start the fundraising efforts for ourReimagine Donovan Park Campaign!
For now, let’s kick off the fall with our November General Meeting, happening this Monday, November 10 at the Historic Houston Heights Fire Station. Featuring some of the amazing local businesses that make the Heights such a vibrant place to live, work, and shop, this month’s Business Member Showcase will highlight some of our supportive HHA Business Members. It’s a great opportunity to connect with owners, discover new local favorites, and learn more about your neighbors.
Next up, I’m thrilled to invite you to our second Heights Mahjong Tournament on Tuesday, November 18. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just Mahjong-curious, this is your chance to show off your tile skills and enjoy a night of friendly competition. We’re almost at full capacity, so get your tickets before they’re gone!
And of course, the Holiday Home Tour is just around the corner. On Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6, we’ll open the doors to beautifully decorated homes throughout the Heights for this beloved seasonal tradition. Join me and hundreds of our neighbors as we go Walking In A Winter Wonderland! Since you won’t want to miss the magic, music, and merriment of our 2025 tour, purchase your tickets today!
Then, once we’re all in the holiday spirit, it will be time for a little shopping and a lot of community fun! You’re invited to the inaugural Mistletoe Market at the Historic Houston Heights Fire Station on Friday, December 12 from 2:00-7:30pm. This festive evening will include a North Pole Playland for the kids, a space full of local vendors, seasonal treats, and all the cheerful vibes you need to feel merry and bright. If you’d like to participate as a vendor or volunteer, send an email to Jordan Chismar, our thoughtfully creative event chair.
Whether you’re rolling tiles, strolling through twinkle-lit homes, or picking out the perfect local gift, I hope to see you out and about over the next few weeks. Thank you, as always, for being the kind of neighbors who support one another, lift each other up, and always make the Heights feel like home!
Love & Blessings, Hannah White President, Houston Heights Association president@houstonheights.org

Help shape the future of our neighborhood by joining the Memorial Heights Redevelopment Authority’s Greater Heights Strategic Connections Plan. This initiative seeks to create safer, more connected streets for walking, biking, rolling and transit in the Heights and surrounding area. One key opportunity: join us on Saturday, November 8 from 11:00am-2:00pm at Stude Park, 2511 White Oak Drive, for the “Play Ball!” event. You’ll be able to review what we’ve heard so far, help refine the ideas for future improvements, and share your input. Can’t make the event? Visit the plan website and take the interactive “Map My Needs” survey online for the same chance to contribute.
A new pedestrian beacon has been installed at 13th Street and Yale—a positive first step toward improving safety along this busy corridor. Watch the short video here. Neighbors have shared ongoing concerns about blind turns, speeding, and the challenges of a four-lane undivided roadway. The HHA is looking to gather community and business feedback to help shape future design improvements.
Houston artist Felicia Schneider draws inspiration from strong, imaginative figures—like the female archers found in fantasy novels—for her sculpture “On Your Mark.” Reflecting both precision and power, the piece embodies Houston’s own mix of strength and beauty. Originally from Oregon, Schneider’s journey has taken her from environmental science to welding and sculpture, blending her love of nature, geometry, and craftsmanship. She now teaches and creates at TXRX Labs, continuing to explore the intersection of art and the natural world.
Ellen and Paula Parker-Krantz fell in love with their charming Heights bungalow on a rare triple lot, envisioning it as both home and garden sanctuary. Since 2022, they’ve transformed the property with colorful Texas natives, azaleas, lilies, and other vibrant blooms that highlight the home’s historic charm. After losing one of their century-old pecans in the May 2024 derecho, they’re already planning new plantings and creative outdoor spaces. Thanks to New Roots Landscaping Nursery & Antiques for providing a gift card in recognition of our November honorees.
Join us on Saturday, November 8 from 10:00am–11:00am at 702 E. 13th Street as we revisit Christine and Larry Stuart’s beautifully evolving garden. Designed with native Texas trees, flowering perennials, and raised beds for herbs and vegetables, their yard reflects a perfect balance of beauty and purpose. We thank Joshua’s Native Plants & Garden Antiques for providing a gift card to the Stuarts for sharing their garden with us once again.
